City Care Partnership is committed to promoting Positive Behavioural Support (PBS) at the heart of its service model. This approach has become the preferred way of working with people with learning disabilities or autism who have behaviours described as ‘challenging’.
PBS is based on strong values. It brings together a way of understanding the behaviour and then the best way of working with the person.
PBS takes the view that the behaviour has a function for that person and the aim is to find that function, and support the person so that their needs are met. This results in the person no longer needing to behave in ways which others find challenging.
The aim of a PBS approach is to increase the quality of life and decrease challenging behaviour by teaching new skills and making changes to a person’s environment.
